Photograph by Stefano Unterthiner, National Geographic
A placid pond high in the Graian Alps mirrors the snow-crowned peaks of Italy’s Gran Paradiso National Park—the oldest protected area in a country known more for culture than for conservation.

Turkish Air
Photograph by Francois Nadeau, National Geographic Your Shot
“You cannot go to Cappadocia without taking a trip in a hot-air balloon and making some pictures—it’s a must!” writes photographer Francois Nadeau. “Most of the photographers were taking shots of the sunrise, the landscape, etc. But I was also attracted to what was under me—the patterns, the little villages. So while I was taking pictures of other balloons and the sunrise and filming at the same time, I was keeping an eye under me for the best shot.”
Nadeau’s picture recently appeared in Your Shot’s Daily Dozen.

Morning Java

A Grand Flyover
Photograph by Jassen T., National Geographic Your Shot
Sunrise at Yellowstone National Park finds steam rising from the surface of the Grand Prismatic Spring, the park’s largest hot spring. Your Shot member Jassen T. overcame high winds and turbulence to capture the view while piloting a plane at 11,000 feet. “This incredible place is not only remote, but flying over high terrain is dangerous,” he writes. “Trying to get the right angle without people on the walkway while trying to maintain the right altitude and attitude also made things complicated. While flying, I remember thinking to myself that I didn’t want to leave. There are just not enough words to describe magic.”
Jassen T.’s picture recently appeared in Your Shot’s Daily Dozen.

Sunrise at Wadi Doan
Photograph by Paul Nevin, National Geographic Your Shot
“With my police escort I had arrived at my lodgings at dusk, perched on the edge of a massive escarpment in Yemen’s Wadi Doan,” says Your Shot contributor Paul Nevin. “In the fading light and on the valley floor I could see this fortresslike village. Having imagined how it might present under a rising sun, I was up at first light. Below me, shepherds and their goats made the only sounds. The sun rose, bathing the escarpment in golden light. It seemed like an eternity before it finally gilded the top of the village—magic.”

Over the Misty Mountains
Photograph by Volodymyr Zinchenko, National Geographic Your Shot
“This photo was taken in the Carpathian Mountains near Kolochava village in Ukraine’s Zakarpatska region,” writes Your Shot member Volodymyr Zinchenko. “It was the middle of October, when after weeks of dry weather, it started raining. There was almost constant rain from the village to the point where this picture was taken—my camera was the only dry thing.” Zinchenko says the warm mountains caused the moisture to evaporate. “That and the autumn colors made the picture.”
