Como é característico em praticamente todo o continente africano, onde há água, há camelos e tratadores. O espaço para a vida seminómada tradicional tem diminuído. O rio Awash, na Etiópia, foi travado por um muro no âmbito de um projecto para transformar sectores do deserto em plantações de cana-de-açúcar.
